- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 medium apples, peeled and chopped
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Custard Sauce:
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 3 egg yolks
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- Make the cake: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in sugar and chopped apples.
- In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and vanilla. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Transfer batter to the prepared pan, smoothing the top. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Make the custard sauce: In a saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until warm (do not boil).
- In a bowl, whisk egg yolks and sugar. Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
- Return mixture to the saucepan and cook on low, stirring continuously until thickened (do not let it boil). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Let the cake cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with warm custard sauce and enjoy!
Notes
- Use Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn apples for the best flavor.
- Serve warm for a comforting dessert.
- The custard sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
