Description

A classic French Dip Sandwich made with tender roast beef, toasted French rolls, and a rich au jus for dipping. The ultimate hearty sandwich!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef & Au Jus:

  • 2 lbs thinly sliced roast beef (deli-style or homemade)
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 packet (1 oz) onion soup mix
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Sandwiches:

  • 46 French rolls or hoagie buns
  • 6 slices provolone or Swiss cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for toasting)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Au Jus:

  • In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  • Add sliced onions and cook until softened.
  • Pour in beef broth, onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  • Bring to a simmer and let cook for 5-7 minutes.

2. Warm the Roast Beef:

  • Reduce heat to low and add the sliced roast beef to the broth.
  • Let it soak for 5 minutes, until warm but not overcooked.

3. Toast the Rolls:

  • Butter the French rolls and lightly toast them in a pan or oven.

4. Assemble the Sandwiches:

  • Pile warm roast beef onto each toasted roll.
  • Top with cheese (if using) and let it melt slightly.

5. Serve with Au Jus:

  • Strain the broth and serve as a dipping sauce alongside the sandwiches.

Notes

  • Best Bread Choices: French rolls, hoagie buns, or baguettes hold up best to dipping.
  • Extra Flavor: Add a sprig of rosemary or thyme to the au jus while simmering.
  • Leftovers: Store beef and au jus separately in the fridge for up to 3 days.
