Instructions
-
Preheat & Prepare Cake Pans
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
-
Make the Chocolate Cake Batter
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add dry ingredients, alternating with milk, until fully combined.
- Stir in hot coffee or hot water (this enhances the chocolate flavor).
-
Bake & Cool
- Divide batter evenly between cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
-
Prepare the Chocolate Ganache Filling
- Heat heavy cream until just simmering, then pour over chopped dark chocolate.
- Let sit for 2 minutes, then stir until smooth.
- Let cool slightly until thickened.
-
Make the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
- Beat butter until creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
- Add heavy cream and vanilla extract, whipping until smooth and fluffy.
-
Assemble the Cake
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate.
- Spread chocolate ganache filling over the top.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with chocolate buttercream.
-
Decorate
- Garnish with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder dusting, or even edible gold flakes.
- Add birthday candles for an Aries-themed celebration!
Notes
- Substitute hot coffee with hot water if preferred (coffee enhances the chocolate flavor but won’t make it taste like coffee).
- Add a spicy kick with a pinch of cayenne or chili powder, reflecting Aries’ bold energy.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
