- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Caramel Glaze:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, mix warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Prepare the Dough: Add sugar, melted butter, egg, vanilla, and salt, then mix well. Gradually add flour and knead until smooth. Cover and let rise for 1 hour, until doubled in size.
- Shape the Donuts: Roll out the dough to ½-inch thickness, cut into donut shapes, and place on a floured surface. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Fry the Donuts: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry each donut for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Make the Caramel Glaze: In a saucepan, melt sugar over medium heat, stirring until it turns amber-colored. Carefully whisk in butter and heavy cream, stirring continuously. Remove from heat and mix in sea salt and vanilla. Let cool slightly.
- Glaze the Donuts: Dip warm donuts into the caramel glaze, letting the excess drip off. Let set before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, sprinkle crushed nuts or flaky sea salt over the caramel glaze.
- Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day.
- For a shortcut, use pre-made donut dough and just make the caramel glaze!
