Ingredients
Scale
For the Caramel
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
For the Flan
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Caramel
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt sugar and water until it turns a deep golden amber color.
- Quickly pour the caramel into a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to evenly coat the bottom.
- Let the caramel set while preparing the flan.
2. Make the Flan Mixture
- In a blender or bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, whole milk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Blend or whisk until smooth and fully incorporated.
3. Bake the Flan
- Pour the flan mixture over the hardened caramel in the cake pan.
- Place the pan in a larger baking dish and fill with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan pan (this creates a water bath for even baking).
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50-60 minutes, or until the center is set but slightly jiggly.
4. Cool & Unmold
- Let the flan cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours (preferably overnight).
- To serve, run a knife around the edges and invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the flan.
Notes
- For a Pisces-themed twist, garnish with edible gold flakes or a sprinkle of sea salt for contrast.
- Substitute coconut milk for whole milk for a tropical variation.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
