Ingredients

Units Scale
For the Dough:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
For the Filling:
  • 1/2 cup black sesame paste
  • 1/4 cup honey
For the Topping:
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp black sesame powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, eggs, and salt. Mix to form a dough. Gradually knead in softened butter until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Buns: Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread black sesame paste mixed with honey evenly over the surface.
  4. Roll into a log and slice into 9 equal pieces. Arrange in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Make the Whipped Topping: Beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and black sesame powder until soft peaks form.
  7. Assemble: Let the buns cool slightly, then top with black sesame whipped cream.
  8. Serve: Enjoy warm, optionally garnished with edible gold leaf for an elegant touch.

Notes

  • For extra richness, brush the buns with an egg wash before baking.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat slightly before serving.
  • Pair with matcha or black tea for a complementary flavor.
